TheSwitchRadio.com has made the decision to join many other respectable technology websites and companies in joining the SOPA Blackout on Wednesday, January 18th. As many of you may be aware, since October, many legislature leaders within our branches of the United States Government have been working to enact a law entitled the Stop Online Piracy Act, SOPA.
While our station does not support piracy in any of its variety of forms, our argument against SOPA is not in its intentions but in its enforcement. Stopping any form or piracy is a battle our world has waged for years and sadly will not end tomorrow. SOPA’s intentions are sound but in doing so it may reap consequences across the internet that could hinder it more useless than useful. SOPA isn’t about censorship, it’s about piracy; but in many of its abilities and attempts to hold the true pirates responsible, they in fact punish the world, inflicting punishment across many innocent internet tools, technologies, providers, companies, and users, such as Google, Wikipedia, YouTube, Facebook, and most possibly YOU.
While the true creator, artist, or owner of the media deserves credit and payment for their exceptional art form, promotion should best be a true form of humility and respect not a crime. As an internet radio station, we provide free audio streaming content to pay homage to our passion, MUSIC. We should not be punished for streaming our passion and pride for music, in its many wondrous genres, while working within the legal frameworks of our society. Instead, acts such as SOPA, could ban us from streaming content, from allowing people to share their favorite musical tributes on YouTube, and cripple our ability to share musical insights on blogs. While piracy does need to be stopped, SOPA is not the answer. Perhaps someday there will be a better answer that holds the true criminals (pirates) responsible and not wage a war where people are afraid to create youtube videos, internet service providers are afraid to be your host, or server hosting providers are neglectful in allowing a community to come together to start their own internet radio station.
We value you all for taking the time to “Make The Switch” and urge you to become more educated on SOPA and speak with your government representatives to find alternatives that actually stop piracy while not inflicting censorship and punishment on the innocent.
